厚德榮譽講座 Hou-De Honorary Chair
Hou [厚] (adjective) means rich in or full of, while “De[德]” means morality, kindness, and good virtue. There is an old Chinese proverb that “a nobleman’s morality is like bamboo”. Bamboo is a good sign to represent a nobleman(君子) for the following reasons:
1. Bamboo can tolerate strong winds without bending(in Chinese: 風過不折), which means a nobleman can always face the challenges without losing faith and without compromise.
2. Bamboo remains clean after heavy rain (in Chinese: 雨過不污), which is taken to mean that it is clean and virtuous.
3. Bamboo can survive in extreme weather condition.
4. Bamboo is segmented (節) and hollow in the middle, which means it is neither concerned with reputation nor treasures money: it does not intend to flatter others in order to purchase a better position.
